The Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Programme was developed in partnership with the National Transport Authority (NTA) and Green-Schools in 2020 as a response to the need to support schools to increase walking and cycling to school.
Limerick City & County Council’s Active Travel team is tasked with delivering the infrastructure to provide the Scheme, following successful funding applications from the schools directly to the NTA.
St Nessan’s NS was selected for inclusion in the first round of the Safe Routes to School programme in 2021.
The Scheme:
Safe Routes To School works at St Nessans NS will be delivered in tandem with the R510 Raheen to Quinns Cross Active Travel Scheme.
The front of school upgrades have been completed for the beginning of the 2024/2025 academic year.
Some of these new upgrades are outlined below.
- Front of school treatment. These include measures to highlight to road users that they are within a school zone.
- New set down area constructed. This area is located approximately 300 metres adjacent to the school, opposite the Church Road junction.
- Upgraded bus stop. This has been constructed opposite the school & is serviced by the 301 Bus Eireann service.
- Pedestrian crossing. A crossing, facilitated by markings and Belisha beacons, has been upgraded and is located approximately 50 metres adjacent to the school gates. pedestrian crossing located at Lower Church Road remains fully operational.
The informal one-way 'drop and go’ area for vehicular traffic inside the car park in morning time will remain in place.
