The project is intended to connect Abbeyfeale town centre to the Limerick Greenway via a cycle and pedestrian facility.

The Greenway was opened in 2021 and stretches 40 kilometres along the former Limerick to Kerry train line, connecting the three market towns of Abbeyfeale, Newcastle West and Rathkeale.

There are a number of potential options being examined and assessed for the route of the project. These include the provision of new cycle and upgraded pedestrian links to the town centre via R524 (New Street), as well as the provision of new cycle and pedestrian links to the town via a green field route.

The Scheme is currently at the Concept Development and Options stage (Phase 2 of 7 in the NTA’s Project Approval Guidelines).

A non-statutory public consultation period on the proposals ran from Thursday, November 9th, 2023 and run for a four week period until Thursday, December 7th, 2023.

The project will come before Councillors via a Part 8 planning application at a later date
