Progress Continues on R510 Raheen to Quinn’s Cross Active Travel Scheme as Night Works to Begin

  • Raheen to Quinn’s Cross R510 Active Travel Scheme

Limerick City & County Council is continuing to progress the construction of Active Travel infrastructure along a section of the R510, from Raheen Roundabout to Quinn’s Cross Roundabout.

Remaining road surfacing works on the project are to be completed overnight during the period commencing Monday 3rd March 2025 and running until Friday 4th April 2025. The works will be carried out from Monday to Thursday nights during the hours of 7pm to 4am.

The works will involve removing a layer of the existing road surface, before applying a new layer of tarmac to the road. This will improve the road’s strength and durability and extend its life span. The surfacing works will ensure a safer, smoother road which enhances the experience of all road users.

A traffic management system will be put in place during these hours and restricted traffic movements, including local diversion routing via Father Russell Road and Church Road, during the above working hours are expected.

Noise monitoring will be carried out on a regular basis.

The decision to carry out these works at night has been made following engagement between Limerick City & County Council, project contractor P&D Lydon and local stakeholders including businesses and St Nessan’s National School.

The project, when completed, will provide new cycle tracks, upgraded footpaths and crossing facilities between the Raheen Roundabout and the Quinn’s Cross Roundabout. This is intended to improve the safety of pedestrians and vulnerable road users in the area.

Upgrade works to bus stops and side road junctions are also taking place.

Improved landscaping works are forming a key part of the project, with more than 160 new trees being planted across the scope of the works. These include:

  • 18 x sweet chestnut trees
  • 15 x beech trees
  • 14 x downy birch trees
  • 14 x scots pine trees
  • Various numbers of hornbeam, cherry trees, oak trees, native hedgerow planting and shrubs

Significant upgrades at the front at St Nessan's National School have already been completed as part of the Safe Routes to Schools programme.

Senior Engineer with the Active Travel department at Limerick City & County Council, Sean McGlynn, commented:

“This project in Raheen is approaching the final stages of its construction, with some significant work already carried out and operational, including at the front of St Nessan’s National School. These night works, along with various road lining and signage installations, are the final key tasks to be completed to finish out the project. We’re carrying out these works at night to attempt to minimise any potential traffic disruption these works may cause for residents, businesses and commuters within the vicinity of the road. It will also prioritise the safety of all road users and working personnel on-site. The Active Travel team and our contractor P&D Lydon would like to thank stakeholders in the locality, who have shown great patience as work has been carried out over the last number of months.”

When finished, the project will form a key part of the Active Travel network across the West of Limerick City – connecting with the Father Russell Road Active Travel Scheme, which was completed last year.

The R510 Raheen to Quinn’s Cross Active Travel Scheme is anticipated to be completed in Q2 2025.
