The Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Programme was developed in partnership with the National Transport Authority (NTA) and Green-Schools in 2020 as a response to the need to support schools to increase walking and cycling to school.
Limerick City & County Council’s Active Travel team is tasked with delivering the infrastructure to provide the Scheme, following successful funding applications from the schools directly to the NTA.
Scoil Ide and St Munchin’s College were both selected for inclusion in the first round of the Safe Routes to School programme in 2021.
The Scheme:
The project is proposed to run approximately 400 metres from Scoil Ide to St Munchin’s College.
It is proposed to install a shared walk/cycle path space on the Scoil Ide side of the Corbally Road, along with widening the footpath on the Irish Estates side.
The Scheme was approved by Councillors via a Part 8 planning application in October 2023, having gone through a public consultation process.
The Scheme is now undergoing Detailed Design and is to proceed to construction thereafter.
