The Active Travel team at Limerick City and County Council, with funding from the National Transport Authority, is continuing to expand and upgrade Limerick’s cycling and walking network.
Active Travel Limerick’s aim is to provide the infrastructure required to ensure people can begin using more sustainable modes of transport – such as walking and cycling – as part of their journeys.
With this in mind and with the aim of understanding the cycling experience in the city and thus enhancing the network of cycle ways around Limerick’s city centre and beyond, LCCC is proposing to use an Insta360 camera device to survey and identify challenges for potential cyclists around the city and county.
The objective of this processing is to monitor and evaluate performance of cycling infrastructure around the city and to utilise the information gathered from this survey to improve the infrastructure.
Active Travel aims to develop safe and inclusive cycling infrastructure to encourage more people to use this mode of transport around Limerick city and county. The processing will assist in identifying areas of the cycle network that require small/medium works to resolve issues that may cause confusion, hinder progress and/or afford unsafe situations to occur.
These are often found at junctions or interfaces between schemes, where a cyclist can leave a safe segregated lane and join a busy main road to navigate an intersection. Additionally the footage will be uploaded to google street view to promote new and existing cycle routes encouraging usage in line with Active Travel objectives.
It involves Video/GPS footage of cycle routes around the city and county. The processing will capture members of the public and vehicle registration numbers. All footage will be uploaded onto Google maps who will automatically redact third party data, i.e. images of people and vehicle registration numbers.
The Insta360 camera will be attached to a pole secured to a back harness worn by an LCCC staff member. Recording will take place in 60 minute intervals to allow for battery change and operator rest. 360:INSV (file format) footage will be recorded with the Insta360 camera onto a microSD card.
This data will be transferred via Wi-Fi/Bluetooth connection to the Insta360 application on an approved LCCC mobile device. Footage will be uploaded from the Insta360 application direct to Google Street View Studio for post processing and publishing to the Google Street View platform, viewable via Google Maps.
When required, footage will also be reviewed via the Insta360 app for the following purposes:
- To identify cycle lane issues/risks, to be included in a cycle lane improvement report
- To promote usage of cycle lanes and Greenways
Footage will be retained for 3 years and will then be offered to the Archivist in Limerick City and County Council
