Once again Newcastle West achieved Bronze Medal level in the Annual SuperValu Tidy Towns Awards. It is our 7th Bronze Medal in succession and our total points climbed by 5 to a total of 310 Marks. The increases were gained in 5 of the 8 judging categories.
The Judges' report was mostly very positive with particular note being taken of the "beautiful" Square with 'some wonderful structures that are maintained in good condition', the sculptures and the flowers.
Longcourt House Hotel is described as "splendid''. The renovations to the Iron Bridge and the Church received favourable comment. We could go on and on and suggest that you read the full report here.
Our local Biodiversity expert, Geoff Hunt is praised for his work with schools, etc. And while we are doing good work in all judging categories, e.g., Landscaping, Sustainability, Tidiness, Residential Areas, Approach Roads, etc. some helpful suggestions are offered.
The report also offers suggestions on areas and activities open for improvement such as some of the derelict sites, which we know that the Council is actively seeking to address. The judge provides some advice on further planting and upgrading Snicket Lane.
We are grateful for the support and commitment of Limerick City and County Council, Arra Development Company (Fás), many Residents Associations and individual businesses and property owners as well as other community groups and of course our hard working committee and volunteers.
To progress further on the Tidy Towns medal ladder, we so need the input of more volunteers and will be encouraging greater involvement of people willing to give an hour or two from time to time.
The full report is also available on www.tidytowns.ie where you can search for the Newcastle West report.
We are particularly delighted to read the Judge's final words: "It was a pleasure to visit Newcastle West. You have a beautiful town. Well done."
