Who is Our Mayor?

John Moran is the [829th] Mayor of Limerick but its first ever directly elected Mayor, indeed Ireland’s first ever. taking office in June 2024. A proud Limerick native, John attended St. Paul’s National School, Dooradoyle and CBS, Sexton Street before earning a Law Degree from University College Dublin and a Master’s from the Wharton School and University of Pennsylvania Law Schools.

Supporting the Mayor: The Team

The Mayor is supported by a dedicated team of six administrative staff to ensure the successful execution of their mandate, with a special advisor. The team's role is crucial in implementing strategies and managing the various functions of the Mayor’s office, promoting efficient governance and enhancing community engagement.

Directly Elected Mayor of Limerick

The journey towards this new role began when Limerick citizens overwhelmingly voted in support of the proposal in local referendum. This movement for change was driven by a desire for more effective leadership and greater engagement in the political process. Following extensive consultations with various stakeholder, including local businesses, community groups, and citizens, the specific duties and powers of the new role were carefully defined.
