Traffic Surveys

For the purposes of understanding how pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles move about Limerick city, Limerick City & County Council are using cameras for counting pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles. These Traffic Surveys are conducted over a short period of time, normally two days, to allow the Council count pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles.

The images captured by the cameras are of a deprecated and compressed quality which only allow counting of a person, cyclist or vehicle basic image but are not be of sufficient quality to allow any element of personal identification either of a person or a vehicle number plate. The footage that is captured is used to determine a count of people, cyclists’ or vehicles’ that pass by this camera. The footage is deleted within 28 days of capture.

Limerick City and County Council use the numbers generated across a wide range of projects, including Active Travel, Bus Connects and City Centre revitalisation plus other day to day functions of the Council like planning, economic development, etc.

To progress Limerick’s Active Travel Schemes, Limerick City & County Council is required to assess traffic levels, to ensure the design of the infrastructure of the project is kept to the highest possible standards. The cameras will be used to detect the numbers of pedestrians and cyclists travelling through the areas they are installed in.

Mobility Counting: Limerick City and County Council also use micoradars which are in place permanently. In these cases, there is no camera, CCTV or other technology used that can capture personal data. What is generated is a count of people, cyclists and vehicles that pass by the radar.
