Taking in Charge is a request to have services within a housing estate taken in charge by the local authority when a development is completed to the satisfaction of the local authority.
The services taken in charge and maintained by the Council are:
- Public roads and footpaths
- Public open spaces
- Public Lighting
- Surface Water infrastructure
The responsibility for the upkeep and maintenance of a housing estate remains with the developer until such time as an estate is taken in charge.

Taking in Charge Protocol
The purpose of the Taking in Charge protocol is to ensure that procedures for the inspection and monitoring of housing developments during construction through an Inspection and Certification Programme are entered into between developers and the Planning Authority post decision, to ensure compliance with the relevant construction standards
