On January 1st 2017, Limerick City and County Council established a vacant sites register in accordance with the requirements of the Urban Regeneration and Housing Act 2015.
The purpose of the register is to identify vacant sites within the functional area of Limerick City and County Council in accordance with the requirements of the act. Sites entered on the register will be subject to the vacant site levy provisions introduced under the act.
Limerick City and County Council has been reviewing, and continues to review sites across the city and county. Where the Council is satisfied that a site conforms with the requirements of the legislation, these property owners have been notified and the site(s) have been entered onto the Vacant Sites Register. For more information about the Urban Regeneration and Housing Act 2015, click here.
Vacant site levy
If a property/site is added to the Vacant Sites Register, the owner is charged a levy until the property/site is removed from the register.
The levy charged is 7% of the market value of the land, which is determined by your local authority.
The owner has the option to appeal the valuation determined by the local authority to the valuations tribunal within 28 days of receiving the Section 12 notice of the Urban Regeneration and Housing Act 2015.
It is planned that a new Residential Zoned Land Tax will replace the Vacant Sites Levy in 2025
Payment of the levy
Vacant site levies should be paid on receipt of a Section 15 Demand Notice.
Please quote your customer account number and vacant site reference number from the Notice when making payment.
