Progress continuing on Raheen to Quinn’s Cross Active Travel Scheme as temporary traffic management system to be implemented

Limerick City & County Council’s Active Travel team and associated contractor, P&D Lydon, is continuing to make progress on the construction of upgraded pedestrian and cycling infrastructure between Raheen Roundabout and Quinn’s Cross Roundabout.

As part of this continued progress, cycle track surfacing works and construction of junction tables between the Raheen Roundabout and the junction of The Grange residential area are to take place during the week of Monday 7th October to Friday 11th October.

For the safety of on-site workers and all road users, a stop/go temporary traffic management system will be in place between Raheen Roundabout and Quinn’s Cross Roundabout during the following hours:

  • Monday 7th October: 9.00am – 5.00pm
  • Tuesday 8th October: 9.00am – 5.00pm
  • Wednesday 9th October: 9.00am – 5.00pm
  • Friday 11th October: 8.00pm – 3.30am (night works to facilitate junction crossings)

Limerick City & County Council is aiming to minimise any potential traffic disruption these works may cause for residents, businesses and commuters within the vicinity of the road.

Motorists are advised to take alternative routes where possible during the above hours.

This next phase of construction follows front of school safety works having been completed at the front of St Nessan’s NS ahead of the beginning of the school term in September.

The full 1km project between Raheen Roundabout and Quinn’s Cross Roundabout, which will provide footpath enhancements, segregated cycle tracks, dedicated crossing facilities and bus stop upgrades, is anticipated to be completed in early 2025.

Senior Engineer with Limerick City and County Council’s Active Travel team, Sean McGlynn, commented:

“The Raheen to Quinn’s Cross Active Travel Scheme is progressing well and, when finished, will enhance the safety of the many people who regularly walk or cycle along the route for work, school or recreational purposes. These surfacing works are an important part of the project, which will provide enhanced infrastructure for all road users. We’d ask those living and working in their area to exercise patience while these works are being carried out. Our contractors on-site will attempt to mitigate any restricted traffic movements as much as they possibly can in the days the surfacing is taking place.”

He added: “This scheme is an important connection piece in Active Travel’s story in Limerick. It will connect with the now completed Father Russell Road Scheme, significantly enhancing the available infrastructure on the West side of the city. The Raheen area is continuing to grow, socially and economically, and the area needs a transport system to meet those demands. Walking and cycling will provide a significant part of that system. This project will allow for road users in the Raheen area to make sustainable transport choices as they travel in the future.”

The Raheen to Quinn’s Cross Active Travel Scheme is being delivered by Limerick City & County Council’s Active Travel team and funded by the National Transport Authority (NTA).

The project was allocated €1.25 million by the NTA in 2024 and €785,000 in 2023.

The scheme has been developed with consideration of the Limerick Development Plan 2022-2028 and is contained in the Limerick Shannon Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy 2040.
