Progress continues to be made on delivering new and upgraded pedestrian infrastructure across Limerick City & County Council’s four municipal districts in 2024, with more than €1 million spent in the year to date.

The improvements are being funded by the Active Travel team through the National Transport Authority (NTA) and are being delivered by the local authority’s Roads, Traffic & Cleansing department.

The works are being completed under the funding umbrella of the Towns & Villages programme 2024, along with various funding allocations for junction tightening and permeability measures.

Projects that are being worked on this year include:

  • Askeaton, Co. Limerick - The existing uncontrolled pedestrian crossing has been upgraded to a controlled Belisha Beacon pedestrian crossing at Askeaton National School. Front of school safety improvements have also been included in the project.
  • Castlemahon, Co. Limerick - New footpaths have been constructed, along with the completion of a new pedestrian crossing outside the Castlemahon-Feohanagh Community Hall, adjacent to Mahoonagh National School on the L1305.
  • Janemount Park, Corbally - Footpath improvements have been undertaken in the estate to improve pedestrian linkages to the existing R463.
  • Ardpatrick, Co. Limerick - New public footpath has been constructed, along with the installation of associated public lighting along the existing footpath connecting Ardpatrick National School to the village.

Mayor of Limerick John Moran said: “Safety on our streets must be a key part of our work in Limerick City and County Council.  We would love to do more but how much we achieve is determined by the funding we receive.  It is great to see the projects already completed.  It is even better to know that other projects already well underway will be completed by year end so that all of our allocated funding will have been used as we look to 2025’s pipeline.”

Director of Service for Transportation and Mobility at Limerick City and County Council, Brian Kennedy said: “The rollout of our Towns and Villages programme is a hugely significant part of our work here in the Transportation and Mobility directorate. Each municipal district receives an allocation of funding through the Active Travel team, with the co-ordination between Active Travel and the Roads, Traffic & Cleansing department being integral to the success of the programme’s delivery in Limerick. We are ambitious and will continue to strive for similar and greater allocations of funding from the NTA and central government in 2025 and beyond in order to keep delivering as many upgrades across the city and county as possible.”
