Africa Day Limerick celebrations took place on 26 May at Limerick’s Milk Market, where people came together to enjoy a celebration of the diversity of African culture and heritage. This year’s event was organised by Limerick Migrant Integration Forum with support from Limerick City and County Council.

The event was free of charge and celebrated African cultures and the positive impact of the African diaspora in Ireland. Guest performances by Ukrainian, Indian and Mexican Communities showed cooperation and support of all migrant communities in Limerick’s celebration of this special day.

Sean Fleming, Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora, emphasised the significance of Africa Day:

“Africa Day is an important event to celebrate Ireland’s growing links with the continent of Africa. It provides an opportunity to showcase African culture, music, dance, and much more. Ireland’s trade, political, and cultural connections with Africa continue to grow, and events like Africa Day allow us to appreciate the diversity and vibrancy of African cultures.”

Kate Njoku, Chairperson of the Limerick Migrant Integration Forum, commented:

“Limerick witnessed an infusion of cultural diversity, glamour, colour, tradition, dance, music, food, Gospel music, choreography, African indigenous arts and crafts, traditional food displays, drumming, poetry, fashion shows, interactive sessions, presentations, and a kiddies’ corner. The energy was high, the drums beat, the music blasted, the voices echoed, and the atmosphere was positively engaging, thrilling, and electrifying. Thank you all for celebrating with us.”

Seamus O’Connor, Chief Officer of the Local Community Development Committee, praised this year’s Limerick Africa Day:

“This event showcased the energy, culture, and vibrancy of Limerick’s African community and was enjoyed by all who attended. The festival was a success due to the Limerick Migrant Forum’s dedicated organisation and delivery. I express my gratitude to the Migrant Forum and all participants, as this celebration exemplifies the positive impact of diversity in Limerick.”
